Despite making up just one-third of India’s geographical area, the Northern Plains are vital to the nation’s economy because of its rich soil, steady supply of water, and climate, which is ideal for farming. They make up over 40% of India’s population, and because of their flat terrain, they are also essential for communication and transportation.
- Stretches 3,200 kilometers from east to west, with an average width of 150–300 kilometers.
- Shaped by Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra rivers and their tributaries in northern, central, and eastern parts.
- Western areas like Punjab formed by Indus River tributaries.
- Young, formed in the last 2 million years due to river sediment deposition.
- Sediment depth varies, generally not below 450 meters.
- Central part of plains has deposits up to 3,000 meters deep.
- Stretches through several Indian states.
Types of Plains and Their Formation Process
Structural Plains are flat areas formed by horizontal rock layers, often caused by volcanic uplift or other geological forces that cause large landmasses to become depressions, unaffected by Earth’s crust movements. Examples include the central lowlands of Australia and the plains of the United States.
Erosional Plains are formed when natural processes like rivers, glaciers, and wind smooth out a region’s surface. There are two main types:
- Peneplains: Formed by continuous erosion over time, leaving a nearly flat surface.
- Pediplains: Result from erosion caused primarily by wind.
Examples of erosional plains include the plains of northern Canada and the Western African plains.
Depositional Plains are created from the accumulation of sediments left by wind, glaciers, rivers, and waves. These plains can vary significantly in their fertility and economic importance based on the type of sediment deposited. Types of depositional plains include:
- Large areas formed by river sediments, often in floodplains.
- Floodplains: Fertile areas near riverbanks, ideal for agriculture but susceptible to flood damage.
- Scroll Plains: Found in low-gradient rivers with meanders and oxbow lakes.
- Lacustrine Plains: Formed in former lakes, support agricultural activities.
- Lava Plains: Created from layers of volcanic lava, visible from satellites or air photos.
- Glacial Plains: Formed by glaciers and divided into:
- Outwash Plains: Created by the sediments left by retreating glaciers, such as in Iceland.
- Till Plains: Formed by unsorted glacial deposits, as seen in parts of northern Ohio.
- Abyssal Plains: Found on the ocean floor at extreme depths (9,800 to 20,000 feet). These vast plains are created by the deposition of silt and are commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean.
Major Zones of the Northern Plains of India
The Northern Plains of India can be divided into four distinct zones based on their relief features:
Bhabar Zone Overview
Located south of Shiwalik Hills, 8-15 kilometers wide.
Composed of gravel deposited by Himalayan rivers.
High porosity makes many streams disappear underground, unsuitable for agriculture.
Tarai Zone
15-30 km wide strip rich in moisture and dense forests.
Ideal for cultivating crops like sugarcane, rice, wheat.
Bhangar Zone
Old alluvium, above floodplain.
Characterized by fertile soil rich in humus and calcium carbonate concretions.
Supports diverse agriculture.
Khaddar Zone
New alluvium areas along riverbanks.
Heavy cultivated due to fertile soil.
