Cropping Pattern

A cropping pattern means how different crops are grown and spread across an area during a particular time. It shows which crops are more important or popular in a region.
Cropping patterns can change over time and vary from place to place. When farmers start growing different types of crops or change the way they farm, the cropping pattern also changes.
For example, when India became independent in 1947, about 75% of farmland was used for food crops, and there wasn’t much variety in the types of crops grown. In the Great Plains of North India, crops like sugarcane were common. Other major crops at that time included:

- Cotton in Maharashtra
- Tea in Assam
What Affects Cropping Patterns?
1. Physical Factors
These include natural conditions like soil and climate, which decide what kind of crops can be grown.
- Soil: The type of soil matters a lot. Some crops grow well in sandy soil, while others need clayey or loamy soil. The nutrients in the soil also affect crop choices.
- Climate: Weather conditions like temperature, rainfall, and humidity affect what farmers grow. For example:
- Dry areas with little and irregular rainfall grow crops like jowar and bajra.
- Wet areas with a lot of water or where water gets collected easily are suitable for rice.
- Good climate also helps in irrigation, which allows farmers to grow multiple crops in one year.

These are related to money, profit, and cost.
- Earning More: If the price of a crop goes up, farmers might grow that crop to earn more money. So, market prices can change cropping patterns.

- Large farmers have more land and often grow cash crops (like cotton or sugarcane) to sell in the market.

- Transport: Good roads and transport help farmers take their crops to markets quickly and easily.
- Storage and Marketing: If farmers can store their crops safely and have good markets to sell them, they are more confident to grow different or high-value crops.
- Post-Harvest Systems: Proper handling of crops after harvest (cleaning, packing, storing) affects which crops farmers choose to grow in the first place.
Types of Cropping Patterns
