Dry Farming

Dry farming is a type of farming done in areas where rainfall is very low and unreliable. It is commonly practiced in arid and semi-arid parts of India—especially in the western region. These areas receive less than 75 cm of rain per year, making them dry and difficult for normal farming.
The dry farming zone stretches from the cold deserts of Ladakh in the north to Kanyakumari in the south. Some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir also have dry farming. In total, around 31.7 million hectares of land (about 22% of all agricultural land in India) are used for dry farming.
Main Features of Dry Farming
1. Dry and Harsh Climate
- These regions receive very little rainfall—usually below 75 cm a year.
- Some places like Jaisalmer and Barmer (Rajasthan) receive even less than 25 cm, making them almost like a desert.
- Long dry seasons lasting 8 to 9 months are common.
- Rainfall is unpredictable—it may arrive late, stop early, or not come at all.
- Even a short break in the rainy season can lead to crop failure.
- Droughts happen often, making farming very risky.
2. Poor Irrigation Facilities
- In many dry regions, there is no proper irrigation system.
- Farming mostly depends on rainfall.
- In contrast, states like Punjab and Haryana have canals and tube wells to support farming, but dry farming areas often lack these resources.
- Without irrigation, crops cannot grow well if the rains fail.
Techniques and Strategies Used in Dry Farming
Farmers in dry areas follow special methods to deal with the lack of water and protect their crops:
1. Soil Ploughing
- Fields are ploughed to trap and hold rainwater.
- It helps water soak into the soil better during the rainy season.
2. Leaving Land Fallow
- Sometimes farmers don’t grow any crops on certain land for a season.
- This helps restore nutrients in the soil and improves its health.
3. Pulverising the Soil
- Before sowing seeds, the soil is broken into fine particles.
- This allows rainwater to enter the soil more easily and helps plant roots grow well.
4. Hoeing, Weeding, and Pruning
- Hoeing is done regularly to loosen the soil and let air reach the roots.
- It is often done early in the morning to absorb dew, which gives extra moisture to plants.
5. Straw Mulching
- Farmers cover the soil with straw to:
- Stop water from evaporating.
- Protect the soil from wind and rain erosion.

6. Livelihood Diversification
- Farmers also keep animals like cows, goats, and buffaloes.
- Dairying and livestock farming provide extra income and reduce their full dependency on crops.
Challenges in Dry Farming
Dry farming comes with many difficulties due to the harsh environment and lack of resources:
1. Irregular and Low Rainfall
- Rain is often scarce and unreliable.
- This leads to crop losses due to droughts or sometimes sudden floods.
2. Poor Soil Quality
- The soil in dry regions is often sandy and lacks important nutrients.
- As a result, crop production is low.
3. Soil Erosion
- Wind erosion removes the top layer of soil, which has most nutrients.
- This further damages the soil and reduces fertility.
4. Low Crop Yields
- Due to lack of water and nutrients, crops grow poorly.
- They are also more likely to be affected by pests and diseases.
5. Lack of Modern Tools
- Many farmers do not have access to:
- Improved seeds
- Fertilizers
- Modern irrigation systems
- Improved seeds
- This is mainly because of lack of money and support.
6. Water Shortage
- Without proper irrigation systems, water is very hard to get.
This makes farming even more difficult, especially in drought years.
