The elements of weather—such as temperature, pressure, wind, humidity, and precipitation—interact and affect one another. These factors influence atmospheric conditions like wind direction and speed, the amount of solar radiation, cloud cover, and precipitation. Together, they constitute the elements of both weather and climate. These elements vary with location and time, and their influence can affect a small area over a short period. We describe weather based on the dominant element at a particular time and place, using terms like sunny, hot, cold, or clear.
Thus, weather refers to the atmospheric conditions of a place over a short period, influenced by one or more weather elements. Even nearby locations can experience different weather conditions simultaneously.
Seasons
Seasons are distinct periods during the year marked by specific weather patterns. They occur due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its orbit around the Sun, causing variations in solar exposure throughout the year. Seasons follow a regular cycle, repeating annually.
In temperate regions, there are typically four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each lasting about three months. India recognizes three main seasons: summer, winter, and the monsoon. The Indian Meteorological Department identifies four main seasons:
- Cold weather season (December to February)
- Hot weather season (March to May)
- Advancing monsoon season (June to September)
- Retreating monsoon season (October to November)
Regions near the equator experience consistent temperatures throughout the year, as the Sun’s rays strike more directly. In contrast, polar areas only have two seasons: long winters and short summers. Coastal areas see more moderate seasonal changes due to the influence of the ocean.
Climate
Climate refers to the average weather conditions over a long period (usually around 35 years) across a large area. Long-term atmospheric patterns, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation, influence it. For example, Rajasthan has a hot and dry climate, Kerala has a tropical rainy climate, and Greenland experiences a cold desert climate. A region’s climate is generally stable over time.
The Elements of Weather and Climate
Eight primary elements or factors influence weather and climate.
- Temperature measures the kinetic energy in the air, experienced as heat or cold. Thermometers measure it, and its value depends on the movement of air particles. The faster the particles move, the higher the temperature.
- Air pressure results from the weight of the atmosphere, decreasing with altitude. Barometers measure air pressure.
- Wind moves air from areas of high to low pressure. Pressure differences influence wind direction and speed, which drive many weather events. Anemometers measure wind speed, and wind vanes measure direction.
- Humidity measures the amount of water vapor in the air, significantly affecting weather and comfort levels. Hygrometers measure humidity.
- Precipitation includes rain, snow, hail, and other forms of water falling from the atmosphere after condensation. Rain gauges measure precipitation.
- Visibility determines how far an object can be seen, particularly in fog or haze. Forward scatter sensors measure visibility.
- Clouds form when water vapor condenses into droplets or ice. Weather satellites and radars analyze cloud cover and movement.
- Sunshine duration refers to the time the Earth’s surface is exposed to direct sunlight, influencing other weather elements.
Factors Affecting Climate
Different regions of the world experience variations in temperature, humidity, and precipitation, influencing lifestyles based on local climates. These variations are influenced by several factors:
- Latitude or Distance from the Equator: Regions closer to the equator are warmer because the Sun’s rays strike more directly. Areas further from the equator receive slanted rays and are cooler. For example, Malaysia is warmer than England due to its proximity to the equator.
- Altitude (Height above Sea Level): The higher the altitude, the cooler the temperature. For instance, Shimla is cooler than Jalandhar, even though both are at similar latitudes. Temperature drops by about 1°C for every 165 meters of altitude.
- Continentality (Distance from the Sea): Coastal regions have more moderate temperatures because the ocean absorbs and releases heat slowly. Inland areas experience more extreme temperatures. Mumbai, near the coast, has milder temperatures and higher rainfall than inland Nagpur.
- Prevailing Winds: Winds from the sea (onshore) bring moisture and cause rainfall, while winds from the land (offshore) are dry. In India, summer monsoon winds bring rain, while winter monsoon winds are dry.
- Cloud Cover: Areas with clear skies, like deserts, experience high daytime temperatures and large temperature fluctuations at night. In contrast, areas with cloud cover, like Thiruvananthapuram, have smaller temperature variations.
- Ocean Currents: Warm ocean currents raise coastal temperatures and can bring rainfall, while cold currents lower temperatures and may cause fog. For example, Norway’s Port Bergen remains ice-free due to the warm North Atlantic Drift, while Canada’s Port Quebec is frozen due to the cold Labrador Current.
- Mountain Chains: Mountains block wind and moisture. Winds on the windward side bring rainfall, while those on the leeward side are dry. The Himalayas prevent monsoon rains from reaching Tibet and protect India from polar cold winds.
- Slope and Aspect: Gentle slopes heat up more quickly than steeper ones, and slopes facing the Sun are warmer than those facing away from it. For example, the southern slopes of the Himalayas are warmer than the northern slopes.
- Soil and Vegetation: Different types of soil absorb heat at different rates. Sandy soils are quick to heat up, while clay soils absorb heat more slowly. Forests, by retaining moisture and blocking sunlight, have more stable temperatures than non-forested areas. Deserts, with bare ground, experience extreme temperature changes between day and night.
